Report Card: Luke Schenn
Defense (R), 6’2, 22 y/o

GP: 79 G: 2 A: 20 Plus/Minus: -6 PIM: 62

S: Luke Schenn’s expectations have been everywhere from being a bottom 6 d-man to a top 4. Was in the top of the league for hits by a defenceman and he can definitely deliver those. An up and down campaign had created rumors of a trade in the works involving Schenn, but ultimately he stayed a Leaf.  In my opinion, he could become a piece in any of Burke’s trades this off-season.

J: I like Luke Schenn, always have, but I’m seriously starting to wonder if it’s better to keep him around, or to possibly try and trade him. This past season was abysmal for him. He did very little to capture my attention. In fact, the few times I did notice him on the ice, were when he made massive mistakes that had me covering my face. He’s supposed to be a shut down guy, and I didn’t really get that from him this season. He’s still young, and therefore still has time to get better before being written off completely. Overall, I was less than impressed with him this season. I hope he can work it out and make it work next season, because there are a few players on the Marlies that I would prefer to see on the ice, over him right now.

Report Card: James Reimer
Goalie, 6’0, 24 y/o

GP: 34 SV%: 0.900 GAA: 3.10

T: It’s was a difficult season for him that’s even more difficult to judge. I think everyone had high hopes and slightly unrealistic expectations that probably could have been met if he wasn’t sidelined for so long with a concussion. His first few games were great but after coming back from the injury, not so much. He struggled, blatantly, though he did pick it up as the end of the season came into view before being sidelined with another injury. However, I still believe that he’s the same goalie that we saw in the 2010-11 season and I hope that he’s given a good chance to show his talent.
Final Grade: C+

S: It seems like we always expect too much of our goalies. That being said, Reimer was playing extremely well at the start of the season. However, injuries do happen and they affect players differently. If it were not for his injury, I believe Reimer would have had a strong campaign, even possibly make it to the all-star team (as he was in the running for quite some time even through his injury. With only a year and a bit of NHL experience under his belt, he needs time to adjust and gain confidence without all the criticism that Gustavsson received over the last few years. A solid blue line with balanced defensive zone coverage would definitely help Reimer’s numbers. Watch Reimer bounce back in his third year with the Leafs.
Final Grade: C+

J: James was playing decently at the start of the season, but then got injured, sat out a whole bunch of games and returned in less than ideal form. He’s a kid, with very little NHL experience. He showed up last season as our savior, and we all had huge hopes for him. I expected a lot from him this season, which was probably unrealistic. I still think he has loads of talent, but he’s not quite there yet. I do want to give him an chance to grow, before we throw him out of our system. That 3.10 can be drastically improved. Maybe having a veteran presence will help him out. I’m hoping this was just a case of the sophomore slump, and that we’ll see great things from him in the future.

Report Card: Jonas Gustavsson
Goalie, 6’0, 27 y/o

GP: 42 SV%: 0.902 GAA: 2.92

T: Inconsistency is the only word that I would use to describe Jonas Gustavsson. As a fan of Jonas, I felt that he played incredibly well through the first couple of months, as well as through a few spots after Christmas. The other times? Not so much. Perhaps it’s simply the original expectations that Leafs fans had of the famous Monster, but there doesn’t really seem to be a huge ‘liking’ for the Swedish Goaltender. After three (partial) seasons with the team, I unfortunately do not think that he showed anything more than any other goaltender could. I think that he will go into Free Agency this summer and find another team where is play may flourish.
Final Grade: C+

S: A goalie that showed small pulses of good numbers,  Gustavsson will definitely be let go to test free agency. Although he did keep us in the playoff race while Reimer was injured, he failed to stand up when he was most needed, notably an OT goal he let in during a Sens/Leaf game. His greatest plays came in January, but it went downhill from there. His inconsistency might be resolved in another market, and best of luck to him.
Final Grade: C-

J: I have mixed feelings about Gustavsson’s performance this season. On one hand, he really wasn’t playing at the level that I expect him to be playing at by this point overall. However he did have some really amazing moments, especially in January and February when he pretty much kept the team from collapsing. But when it comes down to it, the Leafs still didn’t make the playoffs, and poor goal tending is one of the mitigating factors. Gustavsson is a FA as of now, and I don’t see the Leafs signing him again and I’m okay with that. We need a solid, consistent goalie, and Gustavsson just isn’t it.
Final Grade: C (mainly for his pre all star game performance)
